THE director of a Lowestoft Mitsubishi dealership has put his best foot forward to raise over £10,000 for charity by completing the gruelling Virgin London Marathon.

Paul Barkshire, Director of Lings Mitsubishi on Riverside Road, Lowestoft was running for Children With Cancer UK and weaved his way around the 26.1 mile course in five hours, 55 minutes and 25 seconds.

The day was a double celebration for Paul as the marathon coincided with his 34th wedding anniversary – his wife Bridget joining the crowds to spur him on.

Paul’s achievement is even more impressive as until September last year he was a non-runner, the 54-year-old gradually building up his fitness and getting himself race-ready by pounding the streets of his home town, Attleborough in Norfolk.

He said: “I’d like to thank everybody for their support and especially those who were able to donate to Children With Cancer UK – I’m absolutely thrilled to have smashed my personal fundraising target. The course was pretty tough and my heart sank at seeing runners coming back on their 20th mile when I was on my 12th, but the crowds were fantastic at keeping you going and shouting encouragement.

“It started out as something I wanted to do after watching it every year on television, but it turned into something I felt I should do, especially after seeing some of the people who are less physically able and the huge sacrifices they make to take part. It was an unbelievable experience and something that will certainly stay with me for a very long time.”
