A MITSUBISHI dealership in Barnsley provided a stern test for competitors at this year’s Highland Games Strongest Man Competition.

Harratts Mitsubishi, located on Huddersfield Road, sponsored the event at the Dorothy Hyman sports stadium in Cudworth, and provided two L200 Series 5 vehicles for athletes to attempt to pull over a 20 metre course.

Dave Thornton produced the fastest time of 22.57 seconds, where both cars were linked together to produce a combined weight of 3.7 tonnes.

Other athletes competing at the event included Scott Lichfield, Sheffield’s current strongest man, Dale Peters, World Masters strongest man and Paul Smith, England’s current strongest man, who won the overall competition.

Andy Picken, from Super Strongman Events, said: ‘This is a new competition and it was great to bring it to Barnsley. Judging by the feedback we’ve received, everyone had a brilliant day and we’d like to thank Harratts Mitsubishi who has been a brilliant sponsor and helped to make the event a success.

‘The vehicle pull provided the ultimate test of strength for competitors and the contest got a great reaction from the watching crowd.’

Andrew Jackson, dealer principal of Harratts, said: The Highland Games Strongest Man Competition lived up to all expectations and it was a great weekend watching the athletes trying to pull our L200s in the fastest time.

“The Mitsubishis got a lot of attention from the crowd and we are delighted to have been part of this fantastic event.”
